Dorsey Edwin Doniphan (1897-1955), born in Washington DC, lived there during his art career as painter, illustrator, and teacher. He conducted an art school from his studio for several years and participated in the Public Works Art Project during the depression, his works are in several public buildings to include murals in the Marlinton, West Virginia Post Office.

He studied at the Corcoran School of Art and the Boston Museum Fine Art School, where he was a student of Edmund Tarbell. He was the winner of the Gold Medal for Life Study at the Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC circa. 1919. His work is at the Historical Society of Washinton DC and the US Navy Department where his portrait of Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams III is in the collection of Navy Secretary Portraits.
